The start of something extraordinary

Swim instructors upskill in teaching school age and adults

Swimmers from Auckland and Tauranga are set to benefit from their instructors attending a recent Swimming New Zealand course to advance their aquatic education knowledge.

The instructors took part in the SNZ School Age and Adult Swim Teacher Award course on Auckland’s North Shore.

The course involved both practical and theory elements with topics including principles of teaching and learning for both children and adults, dry land drills to improve flexibility and strokes and recognising and correcting faults in all strokes including starts and turns.

To assist with the teaching on some of these topics five swimmers from North Shore Swimming Club were on hand to demonstrate their skills.

The course attendees were also able to practise drills themselves and with the swimmers to see how everything fits together in the development of each stroke.

Those attending the course found it beneficial to have the North Shore swimmers demonstrate and then be able to work with them to see the skills they need to work on for their swim school students to progress to a club level.

One of the course participants who assists with her local schools swim team came away with ideas on the areas swimmers at the school could work on to improve at interschool competitions.

The course participants now have to complete the post course requirements to achieve the qualification.
