The start of something extraordinary

Golden and Bronze on Day 1 of IPC Swimming World Championships

Mary Fisher once again showed the Para-Swimming world that she means business by winning Gold in the Women’s S11 100m Freestyle S11 on the first day of the IPC Swimming World Championships in Glasgow.

Fisher won the S11 50m Freestyle convincingly and with a time of 1:10.3. This was a great swim defending her 2013 World Championship title.

Sophie Pascoe followed shortly afterwards with a Bronze in the blistering Women’s S10 50m Freestyle final in a time of 28:00. This is the second fastest time Sophie has swam in this event.

Jon Shaw (PNZ Head Swim Coach) said, "It was a solid start for the New Zealand Para-Swim Team at the 2015 IPC Swimming World Championships in Glasgow. Seven Kiwi swimmers took to the water with all seven making finals and four producing PB's. It was pleasing to see our debutant Hamish Mclean, swim well throughout the day and set personal bests in the S6 400m Freestyle heat and final. This bodes well for the rest of the meet...a great experience. This is a high pressure meet one year out from the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. The team are performing as we would expect within a great team environment and have really come together with great support for each other. We are looking forward to building on the performances of today during the rest of the meet."

The morning heats session was a great warm up for the finals and saw four Kiwi Para-Swimmers swim personal best times including Rebecca Dubber (S7 100m Freestyle), Cameron Leslie (S5 50m Backstroke), Jesse Reynolds (S9 100m Backstroke) and Hamish Mclean (S6 400m Freestyle).
