Some of New Zealand’s Commonwealth Games swimmers had a useful hit-out along with some of Australia's best in Brisbane at the weekend.
Matthew Stanley, Tash Hind and Mitchell Donaldson took part in the third Grand Prix meet at Brisbane, along with some of the Kiwis aiming for the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Hawaii in August.
Stanley finished second in the 400m freestyle in 3:52.13, while Hind was third in the 200m freestyle in 2:01.56, won by Olympic and commonwealth Games gold medallist, Bronte Barratt.
Donaldson, who is based in Sydney, was third in the 200m individual medley in 2:04.39.
Of the other Kiwis racing, Julian Layton (2:17.20) and George Schroder (2:17.73) finished one-two in the 200m breaststroke. Julian Weir (53.08) in the 100m freestyle, Andrew Trembath (59.95) and Gabrielle Fa’amausili (1:05.06) in the 100m backstroke, were all placed sixth.
Fa’amausili, preparing for August’s Youth Olympic Games in China, was also fourth in the 50m freestyle in 26.37s.
Stanley, Donaldson and Hind will fly out to Europe to meet up with the rest of the Commonwealth Games squad who are travelling from altitude training in Spain. The group will compete in the French Open Championships in Vichy this weekend before moving to their final staging camp in Mallorca.
