Lauren Boyle believes she can swim faster and is in a good place with a year to the Rio Olympics.
Boyle has completed another outstanding FINA World Championships with silver medals in the 800m freestyle and 1500m freestyle.
This gives her five medals, making her the most successful New Zealand swimmer in history at the world championships.
Her campaign concluded with a silver medal in the 800m freestyle behind American Katie Ledecky who broke her own world record in the process.
Boyle also broke her own Oceania and New Zealand records.
“I believe I can swim faster but it is about doing it at the right time with the right preparation,” Boyle said.
“Right now I am grateful for the position I am in with a year out to the Rio Olympics.
“I am really happy with my performance. It was fantastic – a personal best time and a New Zealand record which is amazing.”
Boyle said while it is not ideal motivation with someone of Ledecky’s class well clear of the field, the nature of swimming allows her to focus on her own race.
She is full of praise for the American teenager.
“What she is doing for swimming is amazing. She has opened minds to what is possible in the sport.”
She also spoke glowingly of her burgeoning relationship with new coach Denis Cotterell, the ebullient Gold Coast coach who has been at the forefront of coaching for four decades.
“Denis is an amazing coach. He has helped me with my technique and with fitness work.
“The thing I love is that Denis coaches because he still loves swimming and is passionate about it. “
Boyle heads away for a photo shoot with Speedo on Monday before heading to Paris for the FINA World Cup next weekend. She will then return home for a short break before returning to the Gold Coast in early September to reset her preparations for Rio.
