Awards night celebrates Wellington swim teachers

The 2015 Wellington City Council Awards received a flourish of nominations for this year’s Swim Teacher of the Year Award highlighting the growing number of quality swim teachers in the region.

The Awards night, in its second year, was held on Friday 7 August at Newtown Park in Wellington and recognised the success of the Wellington City Councils (WCC) sports, parks and recreation staff.

Swimming New Zealand Education Advisor Sarah Gibbison was invited to help judge the Swim Teacher of the Year Award which received 15 nominations, up from just three the previous year.

The winner, Vivian Christy-Jones from Karori Pool, holds her Swimming New Zealand Swim Teacher Award (STA) and is currently working through her School Age and Adult Award. She is also an internal STA tutor for WCC staff.

The event also saw WCC staff being awarded NZQA qualifications achieved in the past year including a number of STA certificates.

Other awards on the night included facility of the year, customer service awards and an award for innovation.

“It was a great night and was really rewarding to see WCC recognise their staff’s efforts in achieving Swimming New Zealand qualifications,” Sarah said.
