Neptune swimmer Kate Godfrey has swum herself into contention for two national titles on the fourth day of the New Zealand Short Course Championships in Auckland today.
Godfrey, who competed at the World University Games last month, was the top qualifier in the 400m individual medley in 4:44.50 from last year’s champion Helena Gasson (North Shore) in 4:49.53.
The 21-year old will also contest the 200m backstroke where her task to take the title might prove more challenging. Godfrey was second fastest in 2:10.09 with the top time going to Caroline Baddock (North Shore) who produced an impressive 2:08.86.
Fellow Neptune swimmer Andrew Trembath was also second fastest in his heat of the 200m backstroke in 1:59.25 with Australian Matthew Pender topping qualifiers in 1:58.90.
London Olympian Andrew McMillan out swam his younger rivals to be quickest in the 100m butterfly in 59.85 while Commonwealth Games swimmer Samantha Lee topped the women’s event in 59.85.
Also in tonight’s finals recently returned world championship swimmers Emma Robinson and Charlotte Webby will contest the 800m freestyle.
