PR 72 - SWC 2015: Many stars shine at the series' kick-off in Moscow

The first leg of the FINA/airweave Swimming World Cup 2015, held in Moscow (RUS) on August 11-12, was highlighted by the outstanding performances of Katinka Hosszu (HUN), the winner of the 2013 and 2014 editions of this competition. Competition was held in a 50m pool, for the first time since the launch of the annual circuit which has become a qualifying event for Rio 2016.

At the Olympiisky Swimming Pool, Hosszu started the circuit very strong and topped four events (100m and 200m free, 200m and 400m IM). She takes the provisional first place of the ranking with 81 points.

Still among women, other athletes in evidence were Jeanette Ottesen (DEN), Emily Seebohm (AUS), Katie Meili (USA) as the three of them claimed gold in two events in the Russian capital. USA’s Cammile Adams posted a swift lifetime best en route to victory in the women’s 200m fly.

In the men’s field, Cameron Van Der Burgh (RSA) and Camille Lacourt (FRA) were the athletes to beat, with both two triumphs in Moscow, namely in the 50m and 100m breast for Cameron and the 50m and 100m back for Camille. Author of the best performance of the two-day competition, Van Der Burgh is the provisional leader of the FINA/airweave Swimming World Cup 2015 ranking. Lacourt stopped the clock in a time of 24.67 in the 50m back, less than half-a-second off his top-ranked time of 24.23 from the World Championships.

In the 1500m free, Gregorio Paltrinieri (ITA) touched home in 4:55.06 for the win, well off his World title time of 14:39.67 from last week.

The FINA/aiweave Swimming World Cup 2015 is now travelling to Paris-Chartres for the second leg to take place on August 15-16. The second leg will conclude the first cluster in Europe.
