The start of something extraordinary

Porirua City Aquatics instructors become qualified

Porirua City Aquatics based in Porirua, Wellington provide both learn to swim and competitive squads to their members.

With approximately 360 members the club make sure their staff have the skills and abilities required to run quality learn to swim sessions.

A number of volunteer coaches from the club recently attended the Swimming New Zealand Swim Teacher Award (SNZ STA) course and have been working through the post course requirements.

Two of these volunteers, Jennifer Greig and Arlaina Loibl, have now completed these requirements to be awarded their SNZ STA qualification and will soon receive their National Certificate in Recreation and Sport – Aquatics (Swim Education) that comes with 43 level 3 NZCEA credits.

Being assessed by SNZ Education Advisor Sarah Gibbison both Jennifer and Arlaina ran professional and well-structured lessons that met the needs of their swimmers.

They had a lovely demeanour with their swimmers, demonstrated activities well and encouraged their swimmers to give things a try. Arlaina even managed to get one of her swimmers to fully submerge after working on this for many weeks.

“The collaborative approach the club takes to teaching children to swim works well and is a very positive experience for all involved,” Sarah said.

“The club has great systems in place to then feed their learn to swim attendees into their squads; all growing the sport of swimming.”
