The start of something extraordinary

Napier Girls, Westlake Boys remain clear in College swimming champs

Napier Girls High School and Westlake Boys College continue to lead with one session remaining in the New Zealand secondary schools swimming championship in Hamilton tonight.

Napier Girls, who took out the female honours last year, have had their lead cut to just 54 points to St Cuthberts, to ensure a close battle for overall honours tomorrow.

Napier have relied on strength in numbers, with the standouts Ruby Adsett and Maddie Mason who have nine medals between them.  Adsett, 15, claimed a win in the 50m freestyle and second in the 400m freestyle today to bring her tally to three wins and one second.

Other females with three gold medals include Peyton Tofaeono (Hamilton Girls, 13); Vanessa Ouwehand (Te Awamutu College, 15) and Madeline Falconer (St Cuthberts, 14).

Victory in the 15 years 200m individual medley lifted Hannah Bates (Christchurch Girls) to the top of the individual medal table with six medals.

In the male competition, Westlake Boys have impressed to go into the final session with a massive 197 point advantage over the 2014 winners, Auckland Grammar.

Westlake were led by outstanding 15 year old prospect, Finn Kennard-Campbell who won the 50m freestyle and 200m backstroke on his way to his haul of six medals including five golds. He was joined at the top of the gold medal tally by Tame Govaerts, 16, from Kings High School who claimed wins today in the 50m and 100m breaststroke and 200m individual medley.

Top of the standings is Pukekohe High School’s Zac Dell on eight medals, with the 15 year old adding four medals today with victory in the 200m backstroke, second in the 50m breaststroke and 200m medley and third in the 50m freestyle.

There was plenty of interest in the performances of the Para-Swimmers and the appearance of double IPC World Champion and Paralympian Nikita Howarth, who won the 200m individual medley.

Individual star was Manawatu’s Christopher Arbuthnott who took out victories in the 100m breaststroke, 200m individual medley, 50m freestyle and 100m breaststroke.

The final session is Sunday morning at Waterworld at Te Rapa in Hamilton.
