Santana Chapman (17) of the Costal Wanderers Swimming Squad, Kapati Coast recently competed at the 8th Asia Pacific Deaf Games in Taoyuan, Tiwan.
Santana is New Zealand’s top-ranked deaf swimmer and represented New Zealand in eight swimming events, coming home with two bronze medals in both the 50m and 200m Breaststroke. These were New Zealand’s first medals at these games.
Santana also recorded three new personal best times at the games in her Breaststroke events.
“Representing New Zealand at the Asia Pacific Deaf Games has been a great experience for me, being able to meet new friends, and of course to be able to come home with two bronze medals. All my hard work has paid off”, said Santana.
This is Chapmans second international event following her debut at the Deaflympics in Bulgaria in 2013 with a goal of qualifying again for the 2017 event in Turkey.
Santana was supported by her family, Grant Campbell – Swimming Coach, and Daniel Harbourne – President for Deaf Sports New Zealand at these Games.
