Lausanne (SUI), January 31, 2014 – The series of FINA’s two major open water swimming circuits kick off on February 1 and 2, 2014 in Argentina. Patagones-Viedma will host the inaugural leg of the 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup while the Open Water Swimming Grand Prix starts with a 57km race between Santa Fe and Coronda.
In Viedma, 66 marathon swimmers (37 men and 29 women) from 14 countries, many of whom are internationally-recognised, will take the departure.
Germany's Thomas Lurz, the most-decorated swimmer in open water history, is the 2013 winner of the 10km World Cup series while American Emily Brunemann finished first among women.
The competition calendar includes seven meets, stretching from February to October, with stops in Argentina, Mexico, Portugal, Canada and Hong Kong. The prize money for the winner of the series in each category is of US $20,000.
On February 2, a total 29 swimmers have entered the 57km Grand Prix race, an 8-hour effort on the Coronda and Salado rivers. Local heroes Pilar Geijo (two-time winner of the Grand Prix) and Damian Blaum, 2013 Grand Prix winner, are among the top qualifiers in the event.
