Two participants on a recent Swimming New Zealand course had their own knowledge to share with the group of soon to be swim teachers.
The residential team members from Van Asch Deaf Education Centre took part in the Swim Teacher Award course in Canterbury with SNZ Education Operations Manager Tracey Hickman who was supported by two sign language interpreters.
The participants from Van Asch brought to the group experiences of swim teaching in the deaf community and lots of ways for adaption which was beneficial for those on the course.
One part of the discussions amongst the group was the importance of visual and physical boundaries such as using lane ropes for class management.
The Van Asch Deaf Education Centre offers residential placements for deaf and hearing impaired students from 10-21 years. Through the residential services students have access to a wide range of recreational and sporting activities including swimming.
Both participants were impressed with the course and Tracey saying she was a great tutor that they could understand and were able to follow her instructions easily. They also enjoyed the pool session and were keen to recommend the course to others.
