The start of something extraordinary

What Next?

According to USA Swimming approximately 80% of parents do not consider swimming as a sport for their child.  Here at Wharenui we actively promote the movement of children from Learn to Swim Wharenui to the Wharenui Swim Club.  Swimming is a sport that can offer numerous benefits for children either playing other sports e.g. improved flexibility, fitness and offers an alternative weight bearing activity or swimming can be a sport whereby children are solely committed to being the best in New Zealand or the World.

Upon finishing Level 5 children should be able to swim 200m Freestyle and be able to swim backstroke and breaststroke to an acceptable standard, children then have the opportunity to continue their learning experience at Wharenui when they move into the Technique section of Club.  Here they progress through Levels 6,7 and 8, and eventually into the squads.  Lessons in Technique are between 40 minutes to an 1 hour long with the goal of increasing distances as well as refining technique.  The lessons are still very much lesson based but elements of 'squad sets' will be introduced.  Butterfly, race dives and legal turns are all introduced at various levels.

Once children are in Technique we also encourage them to have a go at swim meets.  This can happen either at our Splash Nights that are held regularly at our pool or at a Junior Carnival held by Swim Canterbury West Coast.  Both of these are great ways for children and parents to be introduced to the sport of swimming.  For both the children and the coaches, attending these meets can be extremely exciting and satisfying.
