The start of something extraordinary

Coromandel Swim Club prepare for summer season

Situated in one of New Zealand’s summer hot spots Coromandel Swim Club often have a busy summer season with holiday makers joining their learn to swim classes.

The swim club often has visitors from Auckland, Hamilton, Te Kuiti and even as far as Dunedin join them in the January holiday period as parents make sure their children keep up with their swimming lessons.

In November this year Swimming New Zealand (SNZ) Education Advisor Erin Fowler visited the club to host a SNZ Swim Teacher Award Course.

Five volunteers from the club joined the course which includes a theory session followed by a practical session in the pool.

Participants on the course learnt that everyone has different ways of learning, i.e. Vision, auditory, reading and kinaesthetic, and ways that they could adapt their teaching so each child can learn better.

As well as learn to swim classes for pre-schoolers to adults, the club also has junior squads, club and competitive swimmers.

The Coromandel community has access to plenty of places to swim including pools, beaches, creeks and waterholes so an important focus in their learn to swim lessons is about how to be safe in all these different aquatic environments.

Coromandel Swim Club now has six trained swim teachers, three coaches and a Swimming New Zealand evidence gatherer ready for teaching this summer.
