The start of something extraordinary

Junior Nationals Report from Kelsi

Junior Nationals Report 2016

As this meet is the last planned Junior Nationals it felt a bit like the end of an era for the coach and 3 female Hillcrest Swimmers we took up to Auckland this year. The 2016 Junior Nationals were held at the brand new Sir Owen Glenn pool at the Millennium Institute. This new pool has a larger capacity than the Wellington facility we have been at in previous years which made the event overall quite an enjoyable experience. The pool was fast and we saw some amazing times emerge from up and coming talents in the swimming arena.

This year we had a small team but in no means small performances. Kaatia Heretini, Francesca Pollock and Hannah Morgan all maintained 100% PB rate over the course of the meet, which is an outstanding feat! Stand out performances include 5 second+ PB’s by Kaatia in the 400m Free and 200m IM as well as a top 10 finish in the 200m Back. Top 10 finishes for Hannah in all her events included a close 4th in the 200m Back. Fran achieved a bronze medal in the Waikato Girls A freestyle relay team. All 3 girls got selected for at least one Waikato Relay swim on top of all of their individual swims.

With juniors drawing to a close the girls are in no way finished. Kaatia and Hannah have both made NAGS times in backstroke and Fran has comfortably qualified for div 2 nationals. The girls are more than ready to competitively mix it in the world of age group swimming and as a coach I look forward to what’s ahead for us all in the next few years!

Coming up in the national events calendar we have a team heading to Div 2 Nationals in Invercargill in March and NAGS in Wellington in April, both prestigious events that these young athletes have been working very hard to get to. Stay posted for results!
