The start of something extraordinary

Congratulations to Ruby and Chelsey who were selected for the 2016 Swimming Wellington Talent ID Squad

Following their performance over the 2015 season, and on behalf of Swimming Wellington, we would like to congratulate the following swimmers that have been selected to be a part in the 2016 All Stars Development Programme. This is the second year of this Swimming Wellington initiative. As a swimmer living in the Wellington Region they will be provided assistance through the Wellington City Council Talent ID (WCC TiD) funding programme which gives them access to High Performance Sport New Zealand resources.  This year we have included two Wanganui swimmers; Elena Forlong and Shannon Schimanski, working with Sport Wanganui on delivery.

Selection criteria for this particular programme involved swimmers achieving 640+ FINA points during the 2015/2016 Season calendar year (see the attached pathway alignment for further details on where this programme sits within the SNZ structure). The approximate cost per person is $1300.

The selected team is:

Chelsey Edwards (SZR)

Hamish Trlin (CAP)

Rebecca Moynihan (RAU)

Bronagh Ryan (PCA)

Devlin Forsythe (KRI)

Ruby Heath (SZR)

Lewis Clareburt (CAP)

Sarah O’Connor (KRI)

Jacob Farr (KRI)

Keely McKnight (RAU)

Jessica Iggo (CAP)

Macy Burns (CAP)

Shannon Schimanski (WSC)

Elena Forlong (WSC)

Facilitated by Sport Wellington, the funding for this programme is allocated towards ‘athlete life’ which looks at swimmers needs, responsibilities and aspirations in the water training, competitions, as well as out of the water and in their everyday lives. Delivered by High Performance Sport New Zealand (HPSNZ), the ‘Athlete Life’ component of the programme prepares swimmers with tools to use in everyday life, training, and competing in the high performance environment.

‘Athlete Life’

The programme will consist of three blocks.

Block One entails learning about Nutrition and Sleep including what snacks are recommended, the importance of hydration, and sleep patterns.

This will then be followed by Block Two; setting Individual Performance Plans (IPPs).  Swimming New Zealand will be part of this development plan.

Block Three is focused on Core Strength training, and held at the ASB Stadium in Kilbirnie.  This will be done with the assistance of your home Coach and Adam Allen from High Performance Sport New Zealand.

Below is a list of topics set by High Performance Sport New Zealand:

-          Developing a sport and personal plan for the season

-          Developing and defining individual and team strengths

-          Developing communication strategies to allow operation at peak

-          Learning to benchmark performance in sport and life time management

-          Understanding energy management, rituals, and routines

-          Understanding performance barriers and developing strategies around actions to change

-          Understanding competitive greatness

-          Develop a sport and personal plan for the upcoming season

The programme will be delivered by Helen Regan and Adam Allen from High Performance Sport New Zealand on the topics shown above. These will look at skills for swimmers out of the water and provide a holistic approach as swimmers look at developing to enter the performance environment. Helen and Adam will also work frequently with swimmers and coaches at a one-on-one level in order to ensure swimmer specific goals and skills are focused on and achieved.

Due to the funding timelines this programme runs from March 2016 - January 2017 but Helen has worked with many swimmers and has a good understanding and awareness of the swimming seasons. Dates for the above workshops are still to be confirmed but will be flexible in order to work around swimmers training and schooling schedules.

We are also looking to provide some pool sessions with these athletes but still trying to secure times.

This funding is allocated towards a number of sports across the Wellington Region so the swimmers will be given the opportunity to interact with other performance level athletes excelling in their sports while taking part in this WCC TiD programme.

You can read more about the WCC TiD programme here. Further information on the All Stars development programme will be distributed at a later date.

Congratulations once again to Ruby an Chelsey.
