Matthew Stanley made his swimming debut for New Zealand in 2008 as part of the Trans-Tasman Team that competed in Australia.
He continued to standout through his age group years and attended the Youth Olympic Games in 2010 before making his debut as an AquaBlack in 2011 at the 14th FINA World Long Course Championships.
Matthew has continued to represent New Zealand as an AquaBlack each year since then including being part of the London 2012 Olympic Games team.
At the trials to make the London 2012 team he broke the national record for the 400m and 200m freestyle, breaking the 200m record again the following year. He is also part of the team that hold the national 4x200m freestyle relay record.
In 2012 Matthew also swam at the World Short Course Championships where at the meet he finished in fourth but was later awarded the bronze medal after the third place finisher was disqualified following a positive drugs test. Matthew was presented his bronze medal at the 2014 Swimming New Zealand Awards Dinner by International Olympic Committee member Barbara Kendall.
He was also the recipient of the Relay Team of the Year Award at the 2014 Swimming New Zealand Awards and has previously won Emerging International Swimmer of the Year at the awards in 2011.
The Matamata swimmer is now set to compete in his first Commonwealth Games at Glasgow 2014. He will be competing in the 400m freestyle, 200m freestyle and as part of the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay.
