It was a quiet session for Kiwi swimmers on the penultimate day of the FINA World Short Course Championships in Turkey today.
Both Cameron Simpson and Matthew Stanley did not progress from the heats of the 100m freestyle in Istanbul in the morning.
Simpson, the Queensland-based swimmer from the Templeton club in Christchurch, managed a personal best 48.87. However the 50m specialist was 29th fastest and missed out on the semifinals.
Stanley was outside his best with a 50.05 effort to be 54th fastest, although it was a shakedown swim for the 20 year old, who completes an exhausting championship with the 1500m freestyle tomorrow.
While the world short course championships does not draw all of the world’s best, the global span of the sport was exemplified in the men’s 100m freestyle which draw 149 starters from 94 nations.
Also in action on the final day is Howick Pakuranga teenager Corey Main in the men’s 200m backstroke, while double world championship medallist Lauren Boyle and backstroke finalist Melissa Ingram will contest the 200m freestyle, which is not the major stroke for either swimmer.
