The start of something extraordinary

FINA World 25m Swimming Championships - NZ Heats Day 2

Australian-based Christchurch swimmer Cameron Simpson broke his national record to advance to the semifinals on day two of the FINA World Short Course Championships in Turkey today.

Simpson, from the Templeton club but now based in Queensland, splashed his way to 10th fastest in the heats of the spectacular men’s 50m freestyle. He clocked 21.62s which edged under his previous record set recently at the FINA World Cup meet in Dubai.

It was a strong performance from Simpson in a powerful field with Olympic relay medallist Vladimir Morozov (RUS) topping the heats in 20.98s ahead of the London 50m freestyle gold medallist Florent Manaudou (FRA) and world championship silver medallist Marco Orsi (ITA).

Simpson, ranked 20th going into the championships, will be back in the pool for the semifinals in the evening to join compatriot Lauren Boyle who competes in the 800m freestyle.
