The start of something extraordinary

Hutchins 3rd in NCAA and Swimmer of the Year

Former Wharenui swimmer and current University of Wisconsin junior Matt Hutchins was named the Big Ten Conference's Swimmer of the Year on Tuesday.  This is after finishing third in the 1,650-yard (1508m) freestyle and sixth in the 500 free at the NCAA Championships last weekend. He also swam on UW's 800 free relay team that finished in 12th place.

Matt came in on 14 minutes, 33.09 seconds in the 1,650 Free, behind Pennsylvania winner Chris Swanson in 14.31.54 and South Carolina's Akaran Mahmoud [14.31.66], and was placed sixth in the 500yd freestyle, where he achieved a school record, finishing in 4.13.35.

Matts attention now turns to the Canadian Olympic trials in Toronto over April 5-10, a meet, which will serve as a qualification event for the Rio Olympics.  All of us back home wish him all the best in his attempt!!
