The start of something extraordinary

Swimming as a Paralympic Sport

Since the first Paralympic Games in Rome in 1960, Para-Swimming has been one of the most popular sports of the Paralympics.

Para-Swimming is governed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and co-ordinated by the IPC Swimming Technical Committee, which incorporates the rules of the International Swimming Federation (FINA). FINA rules are followed allowing for modifications, such as optional platform or in-water starts for some races and the use of signals or 'tappers' for swimmers with visual impairments; however, no prostheses or assistive devices are permitted.

Para-Swimming provides competition for athletes with physical, visual and intellectual impairments in 152 medal events. Athletes compete for medals in freestyle, breaststroke, medley, backstroke and butterfly in distances ranging from the 50m sprint to the endurance test of 400m. Men's and women's relays are also included in the programme with a 4 x 100m freestyle and medley and a mixed 4 x 50m freestyle.
