Howick Pakuranga swimmer Corey Main has grabbed two more medals on the final day of the Southeastern Conference Championship in Georgia.
Main, swimming for the University of Florida, earned silver medals in the 400 yard freestyle relay and also the 200 yard backstroke.
Howick Pakuranga swimmer Corey Main has grabbed two more medals on the final day of the Southeastern Conference Championship in Georgia.
He produced an outstanding 1:40:99 to finish behind last year’s USA junior representative Sean Lehane (Tennessee).
Main’s time, converted from yards to metres, equates to better than the current New Zealand short course national record.
Notwithstanding the imperfection of converting from yards to metres and from short course to long course, Main’s time also converts to a time that is inside the qualifying mark for the 200m backstroke for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Main is returning for April’s national championships which double as the official trial for Glasgow.
Three other New Zealanders were competing in Florida with North Canterbury’s Natasha Lloyd, on scholarship at Auburn, 21st in the 100 yard breaststroke in 2:13.91, Capital Swim Club Ellen Quirke who studies at Texas A&M finished 23rd in the women’s 1650 yard freestyle on the final day while earlier in the week Howick Pakuranga’s Alex Hancock, also at Auburn, was 10th in the 200 yards individual medley.
