The start of something extraordinary

Main finishes 15th

Counties Manukau swimmer Corey Main couldn’t repeat his morning heroics when he contested the 100m backstroke semi-finals today.

The 21-year-old, who swam a personal best of 53.99s in his heat to grab the final qualifying spot for the semis, was not as quick in the evening.

Swimming in the first of the semis, Main was seventh in 54.29s and ended up 15th overall but was happy with his overall performance.

“Today I did a PB and made the semi-finals at the Olympics in my second best stroke. You’ve got to be pleased with that,” he said.

“I came here 29th in the rankings and now I'm 15th.

Main now looks ahead to his favoured 200m backstroke event in three days’ time.”

“It sets me up well and gives me confidence looking ahead to the 200m.”
