The start of something extraordinary

Main, Ashby 14th after semi-finals

Corey Main and Bradlee Ashby couldn't find their best in today's semi-finals to both finish 14th in their respective events.

Main finished 14th in the 200m backstroke semis, being timed at 1min 58.08s. The leading qualifier was Russian Evgeny Rylov in 1 min 54.45s.

The Counties Manukau swimmer finishes his Olympic campaign having made the semi-finals in both the 100m and 200m backstroke as well as recording personal bests in the heats of each event. He was 15th overall in the 100m backstroke.

In the 200m individual medley semis, Ashby swam 2min 00.45s and finished sixth in his heat, 14th overall. American star Michael Phelps was the fastest qualifier, in 1 min 55.78s.

Ashby had swum right up to his personal best with a time of 1:59.77 in the heats to edge into the semi-finals of the event. Earlier in the week he finished 29th in the 200m butterfly.

Tomorrow’s schedule will see Lauren Boyle and Emma Robinson compete in the 800m freestyle from 1:38pm local time and 4:38am NZ time.
