Outstanding Wellington swimmer Mary Fisher was close to adding to her medal haul on day eight of Para-Swimming action in Rio.
She finished fourth in the final of the women’s 100m freestyle S11 in 1:09.47 which was just a touch outside her previous best. Fisher was fifth fastest overall in the heats and improved to be just outside the medals won by Qing Xie (CHN) in 1:08.03.
It was her second fourth placing in Rio along with her gold medal in the 100m backstroke.
Earlier Jesse Reynolds was ninth fastest after heats of the men’s 100m butterfly S9, with a personal best 1:04.50 being 15/100ths of a second off the top eight, but was through to the final after a scratching.
Reynolds finished eighth in the final in 1:04.31 with the gold going to Dimosthenis Michalentzakis (GRE) in a new Paralympic record time of 59.27.
Tomorrow’s penultimate day of action in the pool sees five New Zealanders in action, led by Fisher who will defend her Paralympic title in the 200m individual medley S11. Others in action include Cameron Leslie in the 50m backstroke S5, Reynolds in the 100m backstroke S9, Rebecca Dubber in the 100m freestyle S7 and Tupou Neiufi in the 100m backstroke S9.
