PR 87 - SWC 2016: Morozov bags four gold in Singapore, Romanchuk sets new WCR

The third and final Cluster of the FINA/airweave Swimming World Cup 2016 kicked-off on Friday October 21 in Singapore for the seventh leg, with two more stops to go in Asia, in Tokyo and Hong Kong.

In Singapore, Russia's Vladimir Morozov bagged four gold medals in the 50/100m free, the 100m breast and 100m IM (times below). Morozov maintains his leading position in the overall ranking with 514 points. The following rank is occupied since the beginning of the season by South Africa's Chad Le Clos (429), who earned two gold medals (50/100m fly) over the two-day competition.

Philip Heintz still keeps the third position of the overall standing despite not taking part in the Singapore leg but is dangerously challenged by Japan's Daiya Seto who is currently fourth. Seto showed great energy this weekend and claimed gold in three events: 200m fly and 200/400m IM.

Mykhailo Romanchuk (UKR) set a new World Cup Record in 14.15.49, record previously established by Gregorio Paltrinieri (ITA) in 14:27.65, who also owns the World Record (14:08.06). Romanchuk was the best in the 400m free too, while Mitchell Larkin (AUS) also won two races (100/200m back).

On Day 1, Alia Atkinson of Jamaica almost equaled, short of just 0.04sec shy, the 100m breaststroke World Record (1:02.36) by clocking 1:02.40. Atkinson also took gold in the 50m breast.

Jeanette Ottesen was the most successful swimmer of the women's competition, after the Hungarian superstar Katinka Hosszu, with three gold medals (50/100m free, 50m fly).

Hosszu, who is now far in front of the overall standing with more than 900 points, added another nine gold medals to her impressive tally.
