Wellington City Council celebrate Learn to Swim success

Wellington City Council has wrapped up another successful year with a 007 themed awards night to celebrate their aquatic programme achievements in 2016.

Each year the Wellington City Council (WCC) celebrate their aquatic facilities and staff for all they achieve throughout the year.

For a third year in a row Swimming New Zealand (SNZ) Education Advisor Sarah Gibbison was invited to be part of the night as a judge for the awards and also a presenter.

Sarah had the pleasure of being part of the judging panel for the Aquatic Education Instructor of the Year award and commented that this year the final decision was really difficult as the calibre of applicants increases each year.

Those who are nominated are judged on many areas including team work, versatility, delivering training to others, initiative and developing programmes that meet the needs of the ever changing community.

All WCC staff members who completed their SNZ Swim Teacher Award were also presented their National certificates in Recreation and Sport (Aquatics) on the night.

“It was fantastic to see so many people developing their skills and gaining this qualification and to see them being recognised and congratulated for their efforts was really rewarding,” said Sarah.

“Seeing an organisation that values staff development and showing a commitment to ensuring their staff are highly trained to deliver quality swimming lessons to their communities is also really rewarding.”

Award winners were Selina Murray from Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre (WRAC), Programmes Team Leader of the Year and Rachel Becker from WRAC, Aquatic Education Instructor of the Year.

Swimming New Zealand looks forward to continuing to work with WCC and congratulate them on another successful year of providing aquatic programmes to the Wellington region.
