Howick Pakuranga swimmer Daniel Hunter has just missed out on a final’s place on day three of the FINA World Short Course Swimming Championships in Canada.
Hunter qualified equal ninth fastest in heats of the 50m freestyle at Windsor, Ontario in the morning, with a time of 21.59s, which was only 7/100ths of a second outside his national record.
However, he was unable to improve on this in his first world championship semifinal, clocking 21.70s to be 0.26s outside the final qualifying spot for tomorrow’s final.
Russia’s Vladmir Morozov, who has won five world short course championship gold medals including two at Canada already, topped the semifinalists in 21.05s.
Both Hunter and teammate Michael Mincham return to the pool on Sunday. Hunter will contest the heats of the 100m freestyle and Mincham in the 1500m freestyle.
The championships finish on Monday (NZ time).
