Daniel Hunter was outside his recent best to miss qualifying for the semifinals on the penultimate day of action at the FINA World Short Course Swimming Championships in Canada.
Hunter clocked 48.04 in his heat of the 100m freestyle at Windsor, Ontario today to be the 23rd fastest and only 26/100ths of a second off qualifying.
The Howick Pakuranga swimmer, in his first world championship, was unable to find the same form as his recent national record of 47.30 that he set at the World Cup meet in Hong Kong.
Top qualifier was American Blake Pieroni in 46.76.
Teammate Michael Mincham (United) was 14th fastest in heats of the men’s 1500m freestyle in 14:47.85. Mincham would have needed to break Nathan Capp’s New Zealand record of 14:38.74 to qualify for the finals with Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri fastest in the heats in 13:24.39.
