The start of something extraordinary

Another record swim by Boyle

Lauren Boyle this morning continued her fine Olympic campaign by qualifying fifth for the women’s 800m freestyle final and trimming her own New Zealand record along the way.

Boyle had already smashed her New Zealand record in making the 400m final earlier in the week. The Aucklander’s time today of 8min 25.91s chipped 0.39s of her national record. She swam the first 400m in 4min 11.57s and came home a couple of seconds slower.

She chased Briton Rebecca Adlington throughout the heat. Adlington won in 8min 21.78s to be fastest qualifier.

The women’s 800m final is tomorrow evening.

Melissa Ingram just missed progressing to the women’s 200m backstroke semi-finals.  She was the 17th fastest of the 37 backstrokers and was timed at 2min 10.63s. Ingram missed out on making the semis by just 0.03s.

Daniel Bell was not a factor in the men’s 100m butterfly. Bell managed 53.76s to be the 37th fastest of the 43 starters.
