The start of something extraordinary

Joining Selwyn Swim Club

Selwyn Swim Club

Selwyn Swim club was founded in 2014 and is located in Rolleston, at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre. The Selwyn Swim Club is relatively new in regards to other clubs in the Canterbury Region however they are a major up and coming swim club in Christchurch. This is due to the hard work and determination of all swimmers, parents, volunteers and coaches giving 100% effort. They are quickly building a strong reputation of producing quality technique swimmers at all levels of competition.

Selwyn Swim Club caters for swimmers part of the Selwyn Swim School Learn to Swim Programme currently from Aqua 7 through to their squad programme. The Club is for those who wish to ‘have a go’ and develop their swimming skills through working on technique, training hard, taking part in swim meets, and being part of the team

Being part of the Selwyn Swim Club team will give you ample opportunities to make new friends, have some fun and experience swimming where you can grow confidence in yourself and as a valued team member. Our dedicated coaches are prepared to give their all to help you succeed.

Meet our coaching team:
Ben Close is our Head Coach, he has a background in competitive swimming to a national level as well as a wealth of knowledge and several years’ experience in coaching and teaching swimming.

Rhys Pryde-Wall is our Assistant Coach, with a background in competitive swimming to a national level, he has most recently spent 4 years as the Head Coach in Gore providing exceptional guidance, technique advice and knowledge.

We also have the support and coaching knowledge from Rachel Craythorne the Swim School Team Leader. She has a background in competitive swimming to a national level as well as experience teaching and coaching all levels. She is our ‘fill in’ extra person for when Rhys or Ben are away.

As well as this we have two nominated team captains these are Miki Tiltman and George Kral, if you ever need anything these two swimmers are very approachable and happy to help you out if you need it.

Why would you want to compete?

Competitions are a fun and exciting learning experience although sometimes they can be a scary one if swimmers feel they aren’t prepared or if they have a lot of pressure on them. Many swimmers encounter this throughout competitive swimming, from junior swimmers all the way through to elite swimmers. The way we can minimise this is by supporting our swimmers through our coaching staff, parents and volunteer help. At Selwyn Swim Club we try to make sure there will always be someone there to reassure and help you, whether it is before your race, at your swimming session, or during warm up/down. We want to ensure you are as comfortable and confident as possible going into a competition so that you are able to give your best in a race and leave happy, knowing that you’ve given your all and had some fun in the process.

What is a competition?

A competition is a contest against a clock and other competitors. This allows you to challenge your ability and skill against your own best times and against other swimmers. This allows the opportunity for every swimmer to have success in each race. You may not win every race you swim, but you may do a faster time or swim to the race plan that your coach has set you. Feedback from your coach on how you swam can help identify areas to improve on, so that you can continue to progress in future. Competitions are a chance to show your practiced skills and consistent hard work from training. Selwyn Swim Club try to make swimming as positive and rewarding as possible so that you can have fun, meet new people, and set and achieve your goals. Most competitions are held within the wider Christchurch region, although we do get the opportunity to travel to the likes of Dunedin, Timaru, Ashburton frequently.  Most national meets are held in the North Island.
