The start of something extraordinary

About Us

The Palmerston North Amateur Swimming Club was formed in January 1904 by Hector Kemp Swallow. When he founded the club he was 18 years old. The first recorded club night was on 16 January 1904 and was held at the Edwards Pool, on the corner of Princess and Main Streets.

In 1912 the Girls Section of the Club started and used the Peter Gray's Hole near the Gravel Pit in the Manawatu River. The Boys Section moved to the Boys High School Pool in Rangitikei Street.

In 1918-19 the Club was responsible for forming the Manawatu Swimming Centre.

In 1925 the Municipal Swimming Baths were opened (behind the Opera House) and both Boys and Girls sections of the club came together for the first time. Activities were moved from there to the Lido complex in October 1966.

In 2004 the Club celebrated its Centennial with a re-enactment of the first carnival, a carnival for today’s swimmers and the unveiling of a plaque now in the foyer of the Lido Aquatic complex.
