Six news records achieved at the recent South Island Swimming Championships have been confirmed by Paralympics New Zealand.
Jane Fox of Orca Swimming Club in Southland broke four New Zealand records for swimmers with a disability at the South Island Championship in Blenheim. Fox set New Zealand benchmarks in the S14 class in the 100m and 200m individual medley as well as the 100m breaststroke and 200m freestyle.
Para swimmer Celyn Edwards of Selwyn Swimming Club, competing in the S8 class, bettered New Zealand records in the men’s 100m and 200m individual medley. He now holds 11 NZ records in the S8 class.
Caitlin Deans of Dunedin’s Neptune Swimming Club was the top able-bodied performer in a field of 215 swimmers from around the South Island. Deans won the open gold medal in six events: 50m, 400m and 800m freestyle, 100m and 200m backstroke and the 400m individual medley.
Kaylee Jackson of the Jasi Swim Club in Christchurch wasn’t far behind, winning five open golds. For the men, Aquagym’s Cameron James and Tasman’s Sam McKenzie each won four open golds.
