The start of something extraordinary

Westgaard, Varoy best on Day 1 in Australia

Auckland’s Luke Westgaard and Nielsen Varoy were the best of the New Zealand contingent on the opening day of the Australian Olympic trials in Adelaide.

Westgaard (Roskill Magic) was eighth fastest in the heats of the 100m breaststroke in 1:03.20, well outside the Olympic qualifying time of 1:00.79.

Varoy, also from Roskill Magic, was fourth fastest in heats of the 50m butterfly in 24.14, which is a non-Olympic event. This was 0.74 outside the New Zealand record held by his clubmate Corney Swanepoel.

Internationals are only eligible to swim in the heats at the eight-day championships.
