NSW Swimming Championships - Day two wrap

North Shore’s Glenn Snyders continued his strong early season form with a further victory on the second night of finals at the New South Wales Championships in Sydney tonight.

The 24 year old from Swimming New Zealand’s High Performance Centre took out the 100m breaststroke with a controlled performance, pushing to the lead at the turn and controlling the pace on the way home. He won in 1:01.99, the 12^th fastest time in the world this year.

Snyders, coached by Mark Regan, led the way for the New Zealand swimmers who earned three podium placings tonight.

Wellington’s Gareth Kean was second in the 200m backstroke, sandwiched in a tight battle between Australia’s leading two exponents, winner Josh Beaver and Ashley Delaney, with less than a second separating the trio.

Kean, 20, clocked 1:59.68 which was a pleasing performance, less than a second off his year’s best in 2011. It follows a second placing in the 50m backstroke on the first night in 25.29, the fifth fastest time in the world this year, and faster than his best at last year’s best set at the World University Games. He is coached by Gary Hurring at the new Wellington Regional High Performance Centre.

The other podium went to Lauren Boyle (HPC North Shore) who was third in the final of the 400m freestyle, just pipped in the final 15m for second, clocking a solid 4:10.64.

There was solid fourth placings to Matt Stanley with a further 1:49 effort in the 200m freestyle, while Roskill club’s NielsenVaroy was fourth in the final of the 50m butterfly in 24.33 after topping the qualifiers.

There are 66 New Zealand swimmers from 17 clubs competing at the three-day meet that has attracted more than 1300 competitors, with the kiwi contingent using the meet as key preparation towards next month’s Olympic Trials.

The championships conclude tomorrow.
