Glenn Snyders lined himself up for a chase for medals on the second day of the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships on the Gold Coast.
The US-based North Shore swimmer was fourth fastest in heats of the 100m breaststroke in his first swim of the meet, with competitors coping with unseasonably wet and cool weather at the multi-million refurbished outdoor facility at Southport.
Snyders, 27, clocked 1:00.20 to win his heat with American Kevin Cordes leading all qualifiers in 59.70s.
He is the third Kiwi to contest an A final following the exploits of Lauren Boyle and Matthew Stanley last night, with that number to extend to six with both New Zealand 4x200m freestyle relays to contest their respective finals tonight.
North Shore’s Laura Quilter equalled her best with a 55.87s to earn a second swim, grabbing the final spot in the B final. Teammates Samantha Lucie-Smith clocked 56.25s and Samantha Lee 57.52s. Australian sisters Cate and Bronte Campbell were fastest in 52.62s and 53.50s respectively.
Steven Kent was best of the Kiwis in the men’s 100m freestyle in 50.92s, close to his best, t0 be 35th fastest from Ewan Jackson51.24. American Nathan Adrian set the standard at 48.05 from Australia’s James Magnussen (48.25) and Michael Phelps (48.45).
The quadrennial Pan Pacific Championships is a five-day meet with full strength teams from USA, Japan, Canada, Australia, the rest of the Pacific and other non-European nations.
The heats begin at 10am local time and finals from 7pm from tonight until Sunday, with the 10km open water swim in the Southport Marina on Monday.
