Wharenui swimmer making waves in Wisconsin

Wharenui's Matthew Hutchins, who is attending the University of Wisconsin, is making headlines in the university swimming scene after tasting success at a recent swim meet in the state.

Hutchins and fellow Wisconsin swimmer Ivy Martin earned Big Ten Swimmer of the Week honours.

Hutchins claimed two events, set a personal record and also finished fourth to lead the Wisconsin men in their dual meet victory over Minnesota this month.

The Christchurch lad finished first in the 500- (4:24:81) and 1000-yard freestyle (9:07.66). His time in the 1000 free marked a personal best and currently ranks him No. 2 on United State's Swimming's NCAA Division I Top Times. Hutchins also came in fourth in the 200 individual medley (1:53.33).

While helping the Badger men remain undefeated on the season (3-0) and earn an impressive win over the border rival Gophers, Hutchins also recorded an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the 500 free.

Well done, Matthew! x2
