Auckland Grammar, Napier Girls take overall honours

Auckland Grammar and Napier Girls have taken the overall honours for their respective trophies at the New Zealand Secondary School Swimming Championships that concluded in Wellington today.

Auckland Grammar claimed the boys’ honours from defending champions Wellington College after missing out on the trophy by just two points last year. They didn’t leave it to chance, putting in a strong showing from day one to end the meet with a total of 966 points, 349 points ahead of Wellington College. Third place petition was Westlake Boys with 504 points.

Napier Girls successfully defended the girl’s trophy finishing on 512 points ahead of Pukekohe High School (462.50) and Christchurch Girls (344).

Hannah Bates of Christchurch Girls was the leading individual overall. She claimed another two titles this morning at the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre to end the week with a total of nine gold medals and one bronze.

In the boys’ individual events, 13 year old Johnson Bishop (Taupo Nui-a-tia College) and 17 year old Hamish Trlin (Wellington College) were the top contenders with four golds each. Bishop added two silvers to his overall tally while Trlin added one silver and two bronze.

Daniel Gaualofa (Kerikeri HS) was the top performing male Para-Swimmer with a remarkable 11 gold medals while Olivia Hay (Whakatane HS) led the girls’ competition with six gold medals.

In the final skins events today Emily Whitehead (Baradene College) took out the girls’ 50m breaststroke while Nicholas Crott won the boys’ 50m freestyle.

A total of 26 individual and one relay meet records were broken over the three days of competition.

Today’s records went to Zachary Dell (Pukekohe), Jason Churches (Westlake Boys), Bates, Satori Dobbie (Middleton Grange), Ruby Wagenvoord (Papanui) and Emily Rennell (Villa Maria College).

Attention now turns to the New Zealand short Course Swimming Championships at the same venue starting tomorrow to Saturday.
