Lausanne (SUI), August 11, 2014 – A total 49 marathon swimmers (17 women and 32 men) took the departure in Lac Megantic (CAN) on August 9 for the sixth stage of the FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup 2014.
Unstoppable Cunha from Brazil claimed her fourth victory in a row and sixth podium finish in this year’s circuit, completing the race in 2h28m03s. Runner-up Cecilia Biagioli of Argentina improved from her bronze at the previous stop in Lac Magog to claim silver, touching home in 2h29m08s while U.S. Emily Brunemann, winner of the 2013 series, took third in 2h32m56s, her first podium appearance this season.
With two races to go to the end of the eight-leg circuit, 2013 world silver medallist Cunha, 2010 and 2012 winner, is well on her way to clinch a third title.
Among men, Allan do Carmo dominated the operations, taking gold in 2h22m30s. This is the first win for the Brazilian this year, after a respective silver and bronze in Setubal and Lac Magog. Do Carmo has been a consistent performer in the World Cup series, finishing in the top-3 in 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013.
Newcomers Australian George O’Brien (2h22m56s) and local Phillipe Guertin (2h22m59s) placed second and third, respectively.
