QEII Swim Club - History and Information

About QEII Swim Club...

QEII Swim Club is based at Jellie Park Recreation and Sport Centre in the north-west of the city at 295 Ilam Road, Burnside, Christchurch. The complex is currently Christchurch’s only indoor and outdoor swimming complex and includes two 25m indoor lane swimming pools. During the summer there is a 50.292 metre heated outdoor pool open for swimming.

The complex is run by the Christchurch City Council. The swim club committee is responsible for the administration of all competitive swimmers who are registered with the club and are known as the QEII Swim Team. We are now utilising Born to Swim Coaching Services for our swim coaching.

In February 2011 the club lost its home pool due to an earthquake and had to relocate from the north east of the city. Despite this hurdle QEII Swim Club are proud of the results we have achieved at recent swim meets. A core membership has stuck together to continue producing results from the new club home at Jellie Park Recreation and Sport Centre.

QEII Swim Club is a top swimming club. We were the highest scoring Canterbury West Coast swim team at the 2013 New Zealand Short Course Championships and the 2014 New Zealand Open Swimming Championships. Our junior team won the New Zealand Championships in 2012 and 2013.

A key swimmer of the club is World Champion and World Record Holder Sophie Pascoe. She was the winner of the 2012 New Zealand Swimming “Swimmer with a Disability’ award as well as the ‘People’s Choice Award’. Sophie is such a fantastic role model to the younger swimmers and a wonderful person to have in our team.

Swimmers progress from their swim lessons through to swim squads. Squads start from Bronze and progress through continually challenging your ability as your swimming improves.

We always need help from parents and some older swimmers to keep the club running and are usually looking for help in a variety of ways so the club can function smoothly.

A team spirit is a feature of the swim club and regularly team members enjoy fun activities away from the pool.  Watch our up and coming swimmers as they progress through the age groups.
