The start of something extraordinary

Cluster swimming sports days for Porirua schools

Students have recently had a chance to get a taste of competitive swimming at cluster swimming sport days in Porirua, Wellington.

On Friday 12 September the Porirua Cluster held the event for the second time, with twice as many schools participating from the previous year.

The following Friday, the Parumoana cluster held their first swimming sports day.

The days were run collaboratively by DASH Swim School, Swimming Wellington, Swimming New Zealand and Porirua City Aquatics Swimming Club (PCA). The efforts of these groups provided school children the opportunity to test the waters of competitive swimming.

Both Cluster Swimming Sport days had events in freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke with heats and then finals. There were also school relays. Students at the Parumoana Sports Day also swam butterfly events.

Swimming New Zealand Board members Margaret McKee and Geoff Brown also each attended one of the Cluster Swimming Sport Days.

Schools that attended the Porirua Cluster Swimming Sports were Tairangi School, Rangikura School, Cannons Creek School, Holy Family School, Titahi Bay School, Glenview School, Windley School, Te Kura Maori O Porirua and St Pius Xavier School.

Participating schools at the Parumoana Cluster Swimming Sports were Adventure School, Discovery School, Plimmerton School, Paremata School, Papakowhai School, Pauatahanui School, Samuel Marsden School and St Theresa's Plimmerton School.
