Lausanne (SUI), September 30, 2014 - Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu was once more the athlete to beat in the third leg of the FINA/MASTBANK Swimming World Cup, organised in Hong Kong (HKG) on September 29-30, 2014. Out of the 17 individual events, the Magyar athlete got 10 gold medals, an unprecedented achievement in a single meet of this competition. Among men, things were more balanced, with four victories each for Chad Le Clos (RSA) and Thomas Fraser-Holmes (AUS).
Hosszu’s golden collection in Hong Kong included wins in the 200m, 400m and 800m free, 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke, 200m butterfly, 100m, 200m and 400m individual medley. The Hungarian star, winner of the series in 2012 and 2013, was also silver medallist in the 50m free and 50m butterfly. Moreover, her triumph in the 100m backstroke in a time of 55.34 was the most valuable performance in the women’s field (994 points).
In the remaining events, Inge Dekker (NED) was the best in the 50m and 100m free, and in the 50m and 100m butterfly, while Alia Atkinson, from Jamaica, made the double in the 50m and 100m breaststroke. Rie Kaneto (JPN) touched first in the 200m breaststroke, completing the list of female winners in Hong Kong.
In the men’s action, the leader of the overall series, South Africa’s Chad Le Clos shone in the 50m and 100m free, and also in the 50m and 100m butterfly (in this race, his 48.56 winning effort was the best of the meet, worth 995 points). Fraser-Holmes was the fastest in the 200m and 400m free, and in the 200m and 400m individual medley. Thomas Shields (USA, 3 wins), Gergely Gyurta (HUN, 1), Ashley Delaney (AUS, 2), Marco Koch (GER, 2) and Daniel Gyurta (HUN, 1) were the remaining male athletes in the highest march of the podium in Hong Kong.
The FINA/MASTBANK Swimming World Cup 2014 will now head to Moscow (RUS, October 4-5), Beijing (CHN, October 24-25), Tokyo (JPN, October 28-29), and Singapore (SIN, November 1-2).
