Lausanne (SUI), October 6, 2014 - Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu continued to impress in the fourth leg of the FINA/MASTBANK Swimming World Cup, organised in Moscow (RUS) on October 4-5, 2014. In the Russian capital, the Magyar swimmer added seven gold medals to her impressive roll of honour, winning the 200m free, 100m and 200m backstroke, 200m butterfly, and 100m, 200m and 400m individual medley. She was also the best female performer of the meet, thanks to her successful 2:02.05 effort in the 200m backstroke.
The closest challenger of Hosszu in Moscow was Inge Dekker (NED), who got four victories: 50m and 100m free, and 50m and 100m butterfly. Mireia Belmonte, from Spain, remained solid on the longer distances, triumphing in the 400m and 800m free, while Rie Kaneto (JPN) got the gold in the 100m and 200m breaststroke. The remaining two winners in the women’s field were Daryna Zevina (UKR, 50m back) and Jenna Laukkanen (FIN, 50m breast). For their performances in Hong Kong and Moscow, Hosszu, Dekker and Belmonte were naturally the top-3 swimmers of Cluster 2 of the competition.
Among men, Chad Le Clos (RSA) also displayed his great shape, leaving Moscow with six victories: 50m and 100m free, 50m, 100m and 200m butterfly, and 200m individual medley. Other swimmers with multiple gold medals include Australia’s Thomas Fraser-Holmes (200m and 400m free, 400m individual medley), Germany’s Christian Diener (50m, 100m and 200m backstroke), and Hungary’s Daniel Gyurta (100m and 200m breaststroke - in the latter, with the best male performance, touching home in 2:01.88). Sergiy Frolov (UKR, 1500m free), Marco Koch (GER, 50m breast), and Tom Shields (USA, 100m individual medley) completed the list of gold medallists in Moscow. Le Clos, Shields and Koch were the first three ranked swimmers at the conclusion of Cluster 2.
The FINA/MASTBANK Swimming World Cup 2014 will now proceed to the final three meets of the series, in Beijing (CHN, October 24-25) Tokyo (JPN, October 28-29) and Singapore (SIN, November 1-2).
