Lausanne (SUI), October 20, 2014 – The FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup 2014 wrapped up on October 18 in Hong Kong following the eighth and final race of the season. The action-packed race featured close finishes among both men and women.
Brazilians Allan do Carmo and Ana Marcela Cunha captured the overall men’s and women’s titles based on their total accumulated points throughout the eight legs.
Carmo’s silver in Hong Kong brought his overall point total to 121, comfortably ahead of Germans Thomas Lurz and Christian Reichert, who tied for second place with 88 points. Carmo won the Lac Megantic and Chun’an stops on his way to the overall title. A regular competitor and podium maker since the launch of the series in 2007, the Brazilian celebrated his first title in Hong Kong.
On the women’s side, Ana Marcela Cunha concluded a brilliant season, amassing 148 points over the eight meets to take home her third World Cup title after topping the rankings in 2010 and 2009. Compatriot Poliana Okimoto (92 points) and U.S. Christine Jennings (64 points) rounded out the top three overall finishers.
Christian Reichert managed to touch out Allan do Carmo for the men’s race in Hong Kong, 1h56m12s4 to 1h56m12s7. That gave Reichert his third podium finish, and first victory, on the circuit this year. German Andreas Waschburger, who won the Lac St-Jean stop, clinched third-place honors in 1h56m12s9.
Hungary’s Anna Olasz swept the event in 2h05m20s7 among women. Poliana Okimoto earned silver in 2h05m20s9 while British Keri-Ann Payne scored the bronze with a time of 2h05m22s2.
A total 93 marathon swimmers (42 women and 51 men) from 21 countries took the departure in Hong Kong’s Repulse Bay.
