Lausanne (SUI), November 3, 2014 – Katinka Hosszu (HUN) and Chad Le Clos (RSA) finished in style at the closing leg of the FINA/MASTBANK Swimming World Cup 2014, held in Singapore (SIN) on November 1-2, both successfully defending their World Cup titles.
Hosszu garnered an impressive 68 medals (51 gold, 8 silver and 9 bronze) while Le Clos’ tally included 27 medals, all of them gold.
Hungarians Hosszu and Daniel Gyurta were the best performers in the entire Series: Gyurta received 1004 points after breaking his own World record in the 200m breaststroke, clocking 2:00.48 on August 31 in Dubai while Hosszu’s win one day later in the 100m IM (heats) in a World record time of 56.86 scored 1031 points.
The 2014 edition of the World Cup featured eye-opening performances with 11 World Cup records, including six World records, five of which were set by Hosszu. In all, 91 men and 81 women from 31 nations medalled in this year’s Series.
Moreover, four swimmers produced outstanding performances, remaining unchallenged in their event throughout the seven legs of the Series: Daniel Gyurta (HUN) in the men’s 100m breaststroke; Chad Le Clos (RSA) in the men’s 50m butterfly; Katinka Hosszu (HUN) in the women’s 100m and 200m backstroke, 200m freestyle, 100m and 200m IM; and Inge Dekker (NED) in the women’s 50m butterfly.
Those shining at the last stop in Singapore were American Eugene Godsoe sweeping the men’s 50m and 100m backstroke; Japan’s Daiya Seto taking out the men’s 200m and 400m IM and Russian Sergei Fesikov touching first in the men’s 100m freestyle and IM.
Among women, Spain’s Mireia Belmonte bagged four gold (400m and 800m freestyle, 200m butterfly and 400m IM); Alia Atkinson from Jamaica swept all three breaststroke events, including a bronze in the 200m IM; Dutch Inge Dekker walked away with two gold (50m and 100m butterfly) and two silver (50m and 100m freestyle).
The top scorer in Singapore among men was Chad Le Clos (RSA) with a swift 1:48.88 in the 200m butterfly (991 points) while Alia Atkinson’s (JAM) performance in the women’s 100m breaststroke (1:02.54) earned 991 points.
