Lausanne (SUI), November 7, 2014 - Besides the elite competing at the 12th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) from December 3-7, 2014 in Doha (QAT), a Youth Programme will be staged by FINA, in co-operation with the Qatar Olympic Committee and the Organisers of the Championships.
Open to the two best athletes by National Federation – one boy and one girl aged 14-16 years old -, the programme aims at inspiring the young talented swimmers to become the Stars of tomorrow. Moreover, it will provide a useful overview of the latest training trends and techniques, thus raising the swimming level of all the participants.
The Youth Programme activities will include lectures, workshops in sport science, technical/training matters, and of course attendance to the finals of the 12th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m).
“This is certainly a very valuable tool in terms of development of our younger swimmers. Giving them this opportunity will provide additional motivation and updated knowledge to these athletes and respective coaches, thus contributing to the improvement of their performances at international level”, considered FINA President Dr. Julio C. Maglione.
The lecturer of this Programme will be Todd Schmitz, USA 2012 Olympic Swim Coach and mentor of Missy Franklin, four-time Olympic champion in London (GBR) and winner of 11 medals at FINA World Championships.
“I am very excited to be selected to run the first ever FINA Youth Programme in Doha. It will be a tremendous opportunity to spread passion and fundamentals about the sport I love, swimming. I am very thankful that FINA, Doha 2014, and USA Swimming have the confidence in me to run such an ambitious programme for the first time”, declared Schmitz.
