Schroder claims podium placing on opening day

West Coast swimmer George Schroder grabbed a podium placing on the opening day of the Queensland Championships in Brisbane.

The Hokitika club swimmer, part of Swimming New Zealand’s high performance squad at the Millennium Institute, was third in the men’s 200m breaststroke.

Schroder clocked 2:14.95, rattling home in 33.83s to be just 7/100ths of a second behind Queensland’s Josh Tierney with another Queensland swimmer, Buster Sykes winning in 2:13.52.

Hawkes Bay’s Julian Layton (Greendale) was fourth in 2:16.12.

Wellington’s Samantha Lee (Capital) was eighth in the women’s 100m butterfly in 1:01.13 after earlier finishing ninth in the 200m freestyle (2:03.34) ahead of her clubmate and fellow Commonwealth Games swimmer Samantha Lucie-Smith (2:04.38).

The meet continues until Friday.
