Lauren Boyle in winning ways in 400m freestyle

Commonwealth Games champion Lauren Boyle was in winning form on the second day of the Queensland Championships in Brisbane.

Boyle took out the final of the 400m freestyle in comfortable fashion, clocking 4:08.59 to finish more than two seconds clear of second placed Jessica Ashwood with all the other leading Australians including Glasgow bronze medallist Bronte Barratt well behind.

Hokitika’s George Schroder, from Swimming New Zealand’s high performance squad, picked up his second podium, placing third in the 100m breaststroke in 1:02.69 with teammate Julian Layton from Hawkes Bay sixth in 1:04.83.

Earlier the outstanding 15 year old duo of Gabrielle Fa’amausili and Bobbi Gichard were fourth and seventh respectively in the final of the 100m freestyle. Fa’amausili clocked 1:02.13 and Gichard 1:03.65 in their final.

The other finalists were Waikato’s Bradlee Ashby, who was seventh in the 100m backstroke in 57.54, and Wellington’s Liam Albery eighth in the 400m freestyle in 4:04.69.
