The start of something extraordinary

SNZ helps swim teachers develop skills in working with under-fives

Swim teachers from Napier Aquatic Centre and Comet Swim School in Gisborne last week spent some time with Swimming New Zealand learning about working with under-fives in the water.

Swimming New Zealand Education Advisor Sarah Gibbison took the attendees through the Early Childhood Swim Teacher Award (ESCTA) course which was based on the best way to manage under-fives and their parents in the water.

The course covered a wide range of ideas including the development of the senses, body development, language development, building self-esteem and baby reflexes.

While the course was theory based this was also supplemented with a pool session.

In the pool participants worked with dolls to learn the best ways to hold babies in the water and how to work through progressive holds, submersions and general water play.

The course also gave an opportunity for participants to share experiences and ask questions. They will now take away what they learnt to complete their post course assignments before being practically assessed to receive their Awards.
