The start of something extraordinary

Rai Valley Area School make most of Kiwi Swim Safe programme

A small country school in Marlborough have recently spent some time with Swimming New Zealand to help learn new ideas and tips for their swimming programme.

Rai Valley Area School are extremely committed to developing safest practises and attitudes around water for both their students and their families.

As a Kiwi Swim Safe School they were able to spend a couple of days with Education Advisor Sarah Gibbison to develop their skills and look at dryland drills that they can use to further enhance their swimming programme.

Over the two days Gibbison spent time with the teachers and their students practising dryland drills on the field and swimming skills in the pool.

They were also able to share ideas about what equipment would be best to use and how it could be used differently.

There was a wide range of swimming ability of the students over the two days from those who were developing their confidence in the water to those who were part of swimming clubs.

The school pool is used every day and even a couple of times a day by students who are keen for more swimming. It is also open at lunch time for recreational swimming.

Rai Valley Area School has a role of approximately 100 students ranging from Years 1 to 13 and have been a Kiwi Swim Safe School for a year.
